Eighteen OTT sites, including Uncut Adda, Dreams Films, and Prime Play, have been banned by the central government’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for carrying ‘obscene and profane’ and even pornographic content, even after several warnings. Notably, India has prohibited public access to 19 websites, 10 applications, and 57 social media profiles connected to these over-the-top services.
Because the OTT platforms appear to have violated Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, they have been prohibited.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting stated, “A significant portion of the content hosted on these platforms was found to be obscene, vulgar, and portrayed women in a demeaning manner,” as justification for the OTT platform ban. It showed nudity and sexual behaviors in a variety of unsuitable settings, including incestuous familial relationships and relationships between teachers and students.
“The content included sexual innuendos and, in some instances, prolonged segments of pornographic and sexually explicit scenes devoid of any thematic or societal relevance..” According to the I&B Ministry,
Regarding the quantity of these over-the-top (OTT) applications, the union government stated that two of these apps had over 50 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store, while one app had over 1 crore downloads. In the meantime, these over-the-top networks’ social media accounts collectively possessed over 32 lakh followers.
The I&B ministry has reportedly barred access to 12 Facebook accounts, 17 Instagram accounts, 16 X (previously Twitter) accounts, and 12 YouTube profiles, according to a government release.
